Disciplinary Grounding

Introducing an escape room experience into workplace initiatives represents a dynamic and innovative method for cultivating intergenerational communication and collaboration. This disciplinary grounding seeks to explore the application of key communication theories to the escape room experience, illustrating its potential to enhance intergenerational dynamics in organizational settings. Specifically, this study will delve into four significant communication theories: Social Learning Theory, Uncertainty Reduction Theory, Symbolic Convergence Theory, and Relational Communication Theory. This capstone project aims to develop, implement, and assess an innovative escape room experience, a unique and intriguing approach tailored to promote intergenerational collaboration within the workplace, valuing and incorporating diverse perspectives at every step.

Social Learning Theory

Social Learning Theory, proposed by Albert Bandura in 1977, emphasizes the role of observation, imitation, and reinforcement in shaping individuals' behaviors and attitudes within social contexts. (Griffin et al., 2014, p. 352) In the context of an escape room experience, participants from different generational backgrounds can observe and learn from one another's problem-solving approaches, communication styles, and leadership strategies. By engaging in collaborative tasks and receiving immediate feedback, participants can acquire new skills, expand their communicative repertoire, and develop a greater appreciation for diverse perspectives. This theory underscores the importance of experiential learning and social modeling in promoting intergenerational communication and collaboration within the workplace, offering a unique opportunity for personal growth and development.

Uncertainty Reduction Theory

Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT), introduced by Charles Berger and Richard Calabrese in 1975, examines how individuals seek to reduce uncertainty in interpersonal interactions through information-seeking and social exchange. (Griffin et al., 2014, p. 110) In multigenerational workplaces, employees may experience uncertainty from generational differences in communication norms, values, and expectations. By applying Uncertainty Reduction Theory to the generational escape room experience, we can examine how individuals seek to reduce uncertainty in interpersonal interactions. In the context of the generational escape room, URT becomes particularly relevant as participants from different generational backgrounds are thrust into a novel and unfamiliar environment, leading to heightened uncertainty about how to collaborate and communicate with one another effectively.

Symbolic Convergence Theory

Symbolic Convergence Theory, proposed by Ernest Bormann in 1972, examines how shared fantasies, narratives, and symbols contribute to group cohesion and identity formation. (Griffin et al., 2014, p. 234) With the assistance of an escape room challenge, participants may develop a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose as they collaborate to overcome obstacles and achieve success. Participants can create a symbolic universe that fosters a sense of belonging and solidarity across generational divides through storytelling, humor, and collective problem-solving. This theory underscores the role of shared experiences and symbolic communication in forging interpersonal connections and strengthening intergenerational relationships within the workplace.

Relational Communication Theory

Relational Communication Theory explores how communication shapes and sustains interpersonal relationships, emphasizing the importance of relational maintenance, conflict management, and emotional expression. In the setting of an escape room experience, participants engage in relational dynamics characterized by trust-building, cooperation, and mutual support. Participants can enhance their relational competence and cultivate positive intergenerational interactions by demonstrating empathy, active listening, and conflict-resolution skills. This theory highlights the role of relational communication strategies in promoting collaboration, cohesion, and synergy among employees from different generational backgrounds.

Significance/Rationale

In my capstone project on a space station generational escape room, I'm applying key communication theories to foster intergenerational collaboration in the workplace. Social Learning Theory suggests that participants learn from each other by observing and interacting. Different generations can share their unique problem-solving approaches and communication styles in the escape room, leading to mutual learning and understanding. Uncertainty Reduction Theory is crucial as participants from diverse backgrounds navigate the unfamiliar challenges of the escape room. This theory encourages them to seek information and communicate effectively to overcome obstacles, reducing uncertainty and building cohesion.

Symbolic Convergence Theory emphasizes how shared experiences can unify groups and strengthen teamwork. By working together to solve puzzles and achieve shared goals, participants from various generations create a collective narrative and forge bonds through collaborative achievement. Relational Communication Theory underscores the importance of effective communication in building and sustaining relationships. In the escape room, empathy, active listening, and conflict resolution skills are vital for establishing trust and promoting cooperation among participants across generational lines.

By integrating these theories into my project, I aim to design an immersive experience that challenges participants intellectually and enhances their ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues of different ages. This approach promotes workplace unity and equips employees with valuable skills to improve organizational dynamics and productivity.

Objectives/Intended Outcomes

Three intended outcomes from this presentation include:

Enhanced intergenerational collaboration: The escape room fosters collaboration among participants from different generational backgrounds. Through interactive puzzles aligned with communication theories such as Social Learning Theory and Relational Communication Theory, participants will actively engage in problem-solving and communication exercises. The outcome aims to enhance mutual understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives, strengthening teamwork skills crucial for effective collaboration in the workplace.

Improved Problem-Solving Skills:  Each scenario in the escape room challenges participants to navigate complex, technology-related dilemmas such as system malfunctions and AI dominance. Applying Uncertainty Reduction Theory and Symbolic Convergence Theory encourages participants to seek information, adapt quickly to changing circumstances, and collectively devise solutions. The experience is intended to improve participants' ability to think critically under pressure and develop innovative problem-solving strategies. These essential skills translate directly to real-world challenges and professional environments.

Reflection on technological impact and overreliance: The escape room serves as an experiential learning environment where participants solve puzzles and reflect on broader societal implications of technology. By confronting themes like over-reliance on automation and ethical considerations of AI, participants are prompted to discuss and contemplate these issues within their generational groups. This reflective process, supported by Symbolic Convergence Theory, aims to deepen participants' awareness of how technology shapes human interactions and societal norms, fostering dialogue that spans generational boundaries and enriches organizational culture.

Project Outline

Context

The space station generational escape room project is envisioned to be implemented within a corporate workplace setting, specifically designed to enhance intergenerational communication and collaboration among employees. This setting could be a large multinational corporation where diverse teams of employees from different generational backgrounds work together on various projects.

In this corporate setting, there is a recognized need to bridge generational gaps that may manifest in communication styles, approaches to problem-solving, and attitudes toward technology. The escape room provides a platform to address these challenges. It provides a controlled environment where participants can experience firsthand the dynamics of intergenerational teamwork, learning, and decision-making.

The project aligns strategically with the organization's goals of fostering a cohesive and innovative workforce. By promoting collaboration through interactive challenges and puzzles grounded in communication theories, the escape room supports strategic objectives such as enhancing teamwork, improving communication skills, and preparing employees to adapt to technological advancements.
