Capstone Introduction
"Escaping Generational Apathy in the Workplace"

I manage six individuals representing four distinct generation groups in my current director role. The unique interpersonal dynamics are obvious between the different generation groups and often result in conflict when tasks require group collaboration. This capstone project aims to design, implement, and evaluate an innovative escape room experience tailored to foster intergenerational collaboration within an organization.

The escape room will be an interactive and engaging platform where employees from different generations can work together to solve puzzles and challenges. The objective is to break down generational barriers, promote teamwork, and enhance communication and problem-solving skills across age groups. I plan to create a dynamic environment where creativity and experience blend seamlessly by leveraging these different age groups' diverse perspectives and skills. I originally planned to interview representatives from each generational group but could not connect that cohesively to a communication problem, whereas the escape room can actively address the existing barriers.

The focus of my research is on the four distinct generation groups currently in our workforce: Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y (Millennials), and Generation Z. I aim to develop specific tasks and challenges that highlight each group’s unique skill set. The ultimate goal is to create a replicable model that can be integrated into the organization’s regular team-building activities. This model will promote ongoing intergenerational collaboration and improve overall organizational performance.

As my concentration in the COML program is ‘Strategic and Organizational Communication’, I see this project as an opportunity to leverage my skills and contribute to the field.
